My first trip in to the science fiction world

The utter geekdom of futuristic science fiction, which mostly is geeky because of made-up words, has been thrust upon me by some recommendations on instapundit.

I read Moving Mars by Greg Bear which had an interesting character and story and was worth reading. The better one though was a Mote in God's Eye. It is a first contact novel and is done superbly well by Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle. It is really good even though it is from 1974.

I will probably be reading some more sci-fi including the popular Hitchhiker's series. It will wear on me soon though with the gerplaks and mutars and buckfutters. Anyone got any good fiction recommendations? I might get Bill Maher's book, New Rules because Bill has lately taken a trip to the center (well the left of center) and is less of an ideologue as he used to be. I read a little bit at Costco and it seemed funny. I read Jon Stewart's book and enjoyed it. You can always use the other side's perspective...

Fiction. I haven't read fiction for a while. I heard Memnoch the Devil by Anne Rice was good.

Well maybe that's why you're an educated intellectual and I'm a hack. I will look in to that book.

I finally did some reading myself only I elected to devour the first Harry Potter books.

I feel SO fourteen right now!

I've read all 6... I feel just my age, 20. Like an immature 20 year old loser, but 20 nonetheless.

I love Jon Stewart's book. I read it at my boyfriend's house (I think he bought it for his dad) and I remember he would always give me funny looks because I was just laughing hysterically in a corner by myself. You should read the whole thing because it's all so good and not even that biased - you know how the Daily Show makes fun of both sides, even if you know they're mostly Democrats.

You probably have read them, but anything by Heinlein (Starship Troopers, Stranger in a Strange Land) are extremely worthwhile.

If you're into something cerebral, look for an online edition of Gulliver's Travels, and read the chapter of his voyage to Laputa. I'm surprised more people don't take this as an anti-government creed.
