Contest Canuckistan

Let's have a contest. Who can explain Canada's government in 100 words or less the best? I know I could read through a ton of shit but let's face it, brevity is a lost art. Alright people put your journalism faces on... Calling elections, no confidence if a measure is defeated or something?

Quoth the Furgeson Brothers:

"The Liberals are in power. Forever. Get used to it."

That's about it.

What he said.

But really, the way it works is this:

The executive -- i.e. the PM and his cabinet -- has to maintain the confidence of the lower house of the legislature. That is, at any given point, they have to have the support of a majority of members of Parliament to keep on governing.

Cabinet ministers are both individually responsible for their own departments -- they are supposed to resign when there's been a cock-up -- and collectively responsible for the actions of cabinet as a whole.

If you're wondering where the outrage at the Liberals has been coming from, violation of those (legally unenforceable) principles is a big starting point.
