Abbas being elected means nothing
I am usually optimistic but this time I will tell you why it means nothing that there is a new guy in the palestinian leadership. Actually a comment on the BBC best explains why:
It will make little difference...those of us who are willing to accept Israel's existence are still threatened and silenced. The PA will continue to be terrorist thugs, and Palestinians will be kept in poverty.Anonymous, Gaza
The palestinian people have to undergo a change themselves. They need to accept Israel. Israel is in the right in this conflict I don't care what anyone says. There used to be two states and the only reason there is not now is because Palestine continued to attack Israel and not recognize its legitmacy.
A good look at the situation in Palestine is in the documentary, Death in Gaza, which shows on HBO and which also shows how unrelenting the people of Palestine are to Jews. This is an old fashioned feud. One side kills someone and so does the other and it continues for purposes of revenge and it will never stop until one side is completely dead or they compromise. Israel is willing to recognize Palestine as long as they stop attacking and Palestine needs to just do it. That's it, stop the terrorist attacks and the Israeli's will stop their occupation. Israel is willing to come to a detente. Most of them anyways. Note another comment on the BBC.
Let us hope he will not walk away from an agreement with the Israelis that would have given the Palestinians statehood. Clinton has called that his biggest regret, when Arafat walked away from the Oslo Agreement in 1993. Israel had given the Palestinians everything they wanted at the time yet out of a desire to keep control, Arafat turned it down. May Abbas be a statesman with a vision.Dwight, Kansas City, USA
At this point I wish to fully withdraw my opinion. I was changed by this guy's opinion.
It does not make much difference whether it is Arafat or Abbas. What matters is how the Americans respond. And so far there is nothing to suggest a change in their attitude of pleasing Israel at any cost.George, Sheffield, UK
It turns out that our country is causing the conflict. God damn the United States! We cause every single problem in the world. We really need to stop doing that. More solid evidence that the US is heavily involved in destroying peace in this area:
From BBCArabic.com: The elections are no more than an American-orchestrated sham aiming at keeping Palestinian people under control. And no matter how much the candidates try to pretend they work for the good of the people, their promises are just false. Safwat Al Hadmi- Hebron, West Bank
Sadly like so many previous "dawns" this election will not change anything until the USA forces Israel (cutting off the billions of dollars of military aid might help) to comply with UN Security Council Resolutions decades old. The hypocrisy of the West on this is nothing short of breathtaking.Matthew

The result of the Palestinian election will have very little effect on the situation in the Middle East... the Palestinian leadership could change a million times, but as long as Israel has America's unconditional (and unfair) support, it has no incentive to give the Palestinians what they want - a just peace. The Palestinian people will never settle for less. So, my forecast for the next few years? More death, more saddening headlines and more broken hearts on both sides of the fence.Yazid, England/Algeria
Seriously now. My side is that Palestine stop the terror attacks, Israel withdraws, and they draw up a plan to maintain side by side sovereignty. The other side is that Israel withdraws. At this point and after reading so many of these comments like the ones above, I am truly exhausted. What can I say? Israel isn't occupying Palestine for fun.
THE OCCUPATION IS AN EXCUSE. The people committing the attacks don't want Israel to EXIST. It will always be something with the Palestinians. Just accept Israel, stop the terror attacks, and negotiate and keep to yourself. Israel should make concessions like pulling out of a lot of the settlements and withdrawing completely after a period of one month or a pledge from Hamas and others to stop attacks. If that happens, then there will be peace. But it won't happen because in the backward culture of the Middle East, pride takes a backseat to logic. Still too many times in the world does pride get in the way of things.
