Arguing

Arguing is very fun and very helpful in my opinion. You get a better understand of your own position and other people's. What pisses me off is how personal people take things. Pursuing truth should be the other's goal as well, and you shouldn't take it personally. If you have ideas, then defend them. If someone calls them into question, who gives a shit, you believe them because they are the best ones right? If they're not, you will soon find out and if you're ego isn't the size of the moon, you can accept it and change your views.

Exactly.

I think I'll quote a lefty with whom I I argued the Iraq war:

"Facts and statistics are just things conservatives use to intimidate people in a debate, and frankly, it doesn't work on me."

And me:

"Excuse me? I thought facts were to back up your argument."

This is after I totally ruined her shit. She said that the Iraq war wasn't worth it because of lives lost, so I pointed out that the number of children saved surpasses the number of people killed by terrorists and collateral damage by about 5 to 1, so surely the war became a net benefit in terms of savers of lives, even moreso if we included adult lives saved. She absolutely refused to argue that one, saying that I was commodifying life or something.

This is what happens when angsty English majors have blogs.

Liberals hate facts and figures unless they're completely skewed. Ask Michael Moore.

I prefer to use the term 'debate' as argument tends to have a negative connotation to it. I've had THREE Libs tell me (online) shit like "Oh, I'll explain my point later" and never get back to me. I was tempted to go back and ask them for clarification but never got around to it. And one of the Libs used to be famous; now he just blogs and pretends to be a big shot in Vegas.

Go figure.

Ever hear Monty Python's Argument Clinic?

"This isn't an argument."

"Yes it is."

"No it isn't. You're just contradicting me."

"No I'm not."

"It's not the same thing."

"Can be."

"No, an argument is a connected series of statements intended to establish a position."

"But if I argue with you, I must take a contrary position."

"Yes, but that's not the same as saying no it isn't."

"Yes it is."

"No it isn't."

Heh.

"But I came here for an argument!"

"This is abuse."

"Oh, terribly sorry."

"No trouble at all. Stupid git." ;)

Thank you! I hate the way relativism and new age thinking have made it impossible to argue it out, and yes, "get at the truth," with people anymore.

Every time somebody talks about "their truth" I just want to strangle them. A possessive truth like that is not a truth but an opinion. Does anyone remember how we used to learn in grade school the difference between fact and opinion? Of course obviously the public schools don't teach that anymore.

I think we need to stop calling leftist liberals too-because they're not-they're Stalinists. And they're certainly not "progressives." I just call them leftists now and hard leftists.
