Is our society abandoning science?
I don't know if there is a breakdown in science because I am 19. I don't know how much people trusted science before my time. I am therefore unqualified as to say whether we are "abandoning" anything but only qualified to say what our current rate of science acceptance is.
People don't trust it as much as they should. My Step-Dad and many other people believe that psychology is a complete "crock". The other day in political science class, the professor asked who didn't trust polls and about half the kids raised their hands. I think this is quite disturbing because science is such a useful tool.
Psychology(Dr. Drew is the man) consistently agrees with what Christians would call "moral behavior". The left ignores it, like they say "Porn is just free love and expression" but psychologists prove these things to actually damage us as well as drugs like marijuana which is also supposed to be harmless. They also continuosly overstate the effects of secondhand smoke.
The right has its fair share of science ignorance too. I know some christians believe in the old age earth theory, which is quite scientifically possible to me. Young earth creationists though need to understand that we have repeatedly tested the age of the earth through numerous methods. If these scientific methods are not believed or just openly rejected, then what does that say about you creator? I don't want to respond to young earth creationist's justifications for their theory.
The fact is that so many people don't understand science, they just decide what to believe and what not to believe and the only factor they use in that decision making process is what benefits their current ideology or psychology the best. I also want to note that psychology has "rediscovered the wheel" and confirmed a lot of parenting tactics that were traditionally taught and passed on. Unfortunately family breakdowns led to the stoppage of this knowledge from being passed on but now is still available through that scary and abstract word "science".
I have been a critic of global warming theories because I just don't believe the evidence is there. I am a regular visitor to www.globalwarming.org and as far as what they say it seems reasonable to me that the earth has changed in the past and there is no reason it is not naturally changing now. As for even if it is changing, our data is not what I would call scientific. We have such a limited amount of data in terms of measuring a whole planet's climate change, and what we do have seems easily corrupted. What this does though is weaken science. People are less likely to believe environmental science and research shows that "environmentalist" is now a loaded word because people are so skeptical of them. I think environmental science is just not skeptical enough. They are not thorough and want to jump the gun. This leads people not to want to participate in real environmental issues like nuclear waste removal, recycling, air quality, underground water contamination and other such things. Remember when nuclear war was supposed to make the area bombed in to some radioactive green glowing inhospitable piece of land? Well people started growing vegetation in Nagasaki one year after and people live there without harm today. I mean bad science corrupts good science and the majority of people don't want to take the time to decipher so they throw it all out.
